Troubleshooting Your Prayer Life By Terri Brown

Troubleshooting Your Prayer Life By Terri Brown

Shortly after coming to the know the Lord, I started a prayer journal.

I bought a small read spiral notebook and started keeping track of my prayers.  I had some people I prayed for daily.  Next, I divided up the week to pray for distinct groups like church leaders and extended family  on different days.  I was very diligent and made an X as I prayed for each person. When I started to be able to scratch off the requests because the prayer was answered, something happened deep within me, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt, God answers prayer.  Call it beginners’ luck or the goodness of God, I saw a great deal of my prayers answered. This was fun!

As life unfurled, some really important prayers didn’t get answered.  I began to ask why.  Not really in an angry, rebellious way, but more “How do I solve this problem?”  I studied the Bible, read books on prayer and hung out with people who took prayer seriously.   Over time I began to see patterns and principles. I dealt with more important prayers not being answered, I went through times of hardly wanting to pray and times I rejoiced when prayers were answered.  I overcame hope deferred, bitterness and disappointment and found joy in the journey, while still being a student of prayer. I was at a regional prayer meeting when one of the leaders said  “We are going to have to take prayer to another level.  Some of you in this room will need to write books on prayer.”  I felt the Holy Spirit settle on me.  While driving home, I was dialoguing with the Lord when I heard, “Troubleshooting Your Prayer Life.”  Thus began the journey that spanned almost seven years.

As I wrote the book, I learned there were some things I had forgiven for which I was still carrying pain.  I experienced how putting words to my life helped me to process my life.  I also saw how many of the situations I had been through could be for the benefit of others if I allowed myself the privilege of being vulnerable. I say privilege because when we are vulnerable and share our story and see others benefit from what we share and maybe avoid some potholes that we stepped in, it causes us to see the fruit of our difficulties.  I learned that any journey becomes doable if you have some friends going with you and that laughter is mandatory on any ambitious and challenging journey.

As I reached different milestones in the book writing process, I realized that I didn’t really know how to celebrate.  I still am not sure I do, but I learned it was important!
