Unexpected Hope by Pam Green

“What are You doing, Lord?”

“What just happened?”

“What am I supposed to do now?”

Have you ever asked something like that?

No answers boomed forth from the sky, but as God guided my steps and filled me with His peace during my husband’s cancer journey, I felt His blessing on my retirement from teaching and return to my lifelong love of writing.

As I wondered at the sudden boldness God had given me in sharing His faithfulness to me through Tom’s illness and death. I imagined what this might look like in others’ lives, creating slightly larger than life characters, just for fun. After all, everyone needs to laugh a bit, even if it’s at the expense of a fictitious character.

After almost nine years of writing Christian fiction, I continue to write about something that’s truth, not fiction: anybody can grow—in grace. Unexpected Hope is the first novel in my brand new Sully Parkway Comfort Dogs series.

Working dogs and service dogs are well known, but what are comfort dogs? In 2022, in the wake of an elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas I discovered the LCC (Lutheran Church Charities) K9 Comfort Dogs on mission. Yes, churches use dogs as missionaries! What if my Church on the Parkway did the same thing? How would this ministry transform the church members involved as well as those they ministered to? I couldn’t wait to write about it, and I’m sure you’ll love reading about it.

Unexpected Hope

Unexpected Hope focuses on Jack. Here’s what’s going on with him:

When Jack Shelton hightails it out of Lexington, Virginia, for the suburbs of Washington, DC, he just wants out. Now. First on the agenda: put mountains and miles between him and his hometown memories. Second: find a job as a reporter. Fast.

Those two things—no other expectations. If he gets that far, maybe he’ll make room for God in his life again.

Then Jack wanders into the Church on the Parkway, and a case of mistaken identity entangles him in ministry with a team of broken people and a golden retriever puppy.

Can Jack get back on track with his new career plans, or will he find something unexpected as he travels Sully Parkway with Team Hope?
