Sync
We celebrated our thirtieth anniversary on Labor Day at our favorite hotel away from home in Vero Beach, Florida.
Originally, we had grand plans to travel to Jerusalem to experience, explore, and celebrate. But plans changed, and instead of an international flight, we drove cross-country in our super comfy pickup truck, listening to talk radio and 70’s music when we got tired. We stopped along the way to enjoy meals at local spots- it wasn’t exotic cuisine, but it was certainly delicious. We missed a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, but I witnessed a spectacular sunrise with my feet in the Atlantic, followed by a meal with my son and his wife and snuggles from our youngest grandson.
Once upon a time, I would have been bummed. Once upon a time, I might have even cried because our special plans were canceled. But after thirty years of loving, learning, and exploring together, we’ve discovered our celebrations don’t have to be spectacular to be amazing. We’ve learned that kind words spoken mean more than a paper card, and a shared purpose is infinitely more valuable than the ‘gift of the year’ (thirty is pearls, in case you were curious). After thirty years, I think we are finally in sync.
The early years were incredible, and I wouldn’t give up a single experience. But life was fast and furious and busy… oh so busy. Not quite frantic, but gosh, as I watch my younger friends chase their kiddos around, I get tired. Maybe I’m just old… I know he worked, I worked, the kids were busy, and somehow we got it all done, but that was often because each person leveled up to do what they had to do to hold our family together.
Life now is a little slower. Jeff is retired and living his best life working on the house, playing pickleball or golf, and loving on our sweet grandsons. I’m living my best life, writing, learning, and coaching women who want to write and learn to be the best they can be., (and loving on our grandsons).
Life is a beautiful thing… comforting, and somehow, it has evolved into everything I’ve ever wanted.
But please don’t tell Jeff. I’d still like to take the trip!
